Michelle Ugalde recently started her Youtube channel in November and she has already been noticed by important companies such as Becca Cosmetics. I found out about her while scrolling on Instagram, watched some of her tutorials and immediately followed her.
That’s why I really wanted to ask her some questions so I can get to know her better. This is what she had to say.
INLICEU:When did you first start doing make up?
Michelle: I started sneaking makeup to school when I was in 7th grade, so about 12 years old. I haven’t stopped since then.
INLICEU: What helped you learn more and more techniques and improve your make up skills?
Michelle: Honestly, YouTube. I’m so lucky to have grown up in the YouTube era where you can literally search „how to achieve the perfect smokey eye” and voila! You have a step by step instructions!
INLICEU: How did you decide to start your youtube channel?
Michelle: It was a hard decision. Putting your work out there for everyone to critique isn’t easy! I also didn’t want to be just another makeup artist. I don’t want to be just another face in the crowd, you know? But I want to help girls the way my favorite YouTubers have helped me!
INLICEU: You have recently just started doing make up online and important people already noticed how good you are. How do you feel about that?
Michelle: It’s so surreal. Having pages and people that I have followed and looked up to for so many years recognize my work and see my potential. I cried so many times the first month that my IG was up. It was incredible.
INLICEU: I saw an Instgram post where you said that someone from Starbucks recognized you. How did that make you feel?
Michelle: Again, extremely surreal! I probably had the most ridiculous „deer in headlights” look on my face. I didn’t know what to say! After I left I thought, „I should have taken a selfie with her!” Haha! But either way, I will never forget her!
INLICEU: I watch your videos and I think you are really professional. What determined you to learn more and more?
Michelle: Well first of all, thank you for taking time out of your day to watch my videos!! As I was learning to do makeup I never really had any ideas of taking it anywhere, I just did it for fun. I enjoyed learning new tips and tricks. I also enjoyed seeing a look that seemed complicated and trying to achieve it. I liked challenging myself.
INLICEU: Whose make up skills do you admire?
Michelle: Oh my goodness, there are so many people, where do I start?!? Some off the top of my head, Desi Perkins, Mario Dedivanovic, Jaclyn Hill, Joyce Bonelli, Manny Gutierrez, Brian Champagne, @IluvsarahII (IG), Amrezy and the list goes on and on and on….
INLICEU: How do you manage to take care of your children and at the same time work for your channel?
Michelle: It’s definitely not easy! I have a 2 and 4 year old that are in constant need of my attention and I absolutely love it! Being a mother and makeup are my favorite things in the world but my kids take the cake!! I film and edit around their schedule. I’ll film while the kids are occupied with an activity. There are a lot of breaks throughout though, whenever one needs a drink, a snack, a hug, whatever it may be. My kids come before any and everything. Then I edit late at night while they’re asleep. My husband helps a lot too! If I have a video I absolutely need to get done, he will take them to the park or play with them while I get my work done.
INLICEU: Tell me a bit about your childhood since you haven’t done a q&a yet. Were you girly or a tomboy? What is your fave childhood memory?
Michelle: I was a mix between girly and tomboy. I had my moments. I loved getting dirty and playing in the woods with the neighborhood kids but I also loved dressing up, playing in my moms makeup and getting my hair done for weddings and special events. I have so many fun childhood memories! One of my favorites was being the main character in a Christmas play when I was in kindergarten. I was „the littlest Christmas tree”. I had a solo and everything. Unfortunately my singing career ended there. lol!
INLICEU: Which cool make up hacks do you know and can share with us?
Michelle: I love a strong highlight so my favorite trick is leaving the highlight for last, spraying my setting spray, then reapplying my highlight while my skin is still slightly damp with setting spray. Talk about a highlight for the heavens!!! You will glow in the dark!
INLICEU: In which direction do you want to head with your channel?
Michelle: I really hope to move my channel deep into the beauty community. I want to be a YouTubers that people can refer to friends and family that need help with makeup application or anyone just looking for a few tips or tricks. I also want my subscribers to know that they can ask me questions and I will always try my hardest to get back to everyone. I love interacting with my followers and subscribers!
INLICEU: What would I be surprised to find out about you? Some random fun facts.
Michelle: -I’m a pretty awkward person and use humor to disguise it.
-I love onions. Like I could bite right into one. Yum.
-I cry every single time I go to Disney. I’m a pass holder so that’s pretty frequently. It’s a magical place. No judgement.
INLICEU: What message do you have for young women?
Michelle: A general statement to young women. Figure out what you love to do and go for it! We live in a time that we can really do anything we set our minds to! Be humble, be smart, be determined!!
INLICEU: What advice do you have for young girls who want to start a youtube channel or a make up blog?
Michelle: Go for it! You never know what you can do until you try. I was told countless times to start an IG or YouTube channel and I was so hesitant. Now my only regret is not starting it sooner!
INLICEU: What is your biggest goal at the moment?
Michelle: My goal is to build my IG and YouTube Channel. I want to reach as many people as possible and to be known in the beauty community as a respected artist that has a true passion for what she does.
INLICEU: How do you expect 2016 to be for you?
Michelle: I expect it to be filled with lots of hard work and busting my butt to get to where I want to be! It’s going be a good year!
INLICEU: How does it make you feel to know that you already have fans from so many countries around the world such as Romania?
Michelle: It makes me smile so hard!!! I’m doing it right now! It fills me up to the top with so much happiness!! I am so fortunate that we live in a time where my videos make it anywhere there is internet!!
